About Me

My name is Joshua, I am the director and primary photographer for Double Denim Studio.

After realising in 2017 that I'd enjoy dancing more if I knew how to do it I signed up for Open classes at my nearest dance school. Starting dancing at 23 was about as daunting as you might expect, but I threw myself into it. Ballet, Jazz, Tap, Lyrical, Contemporary, Acro. I got to try almost everything.

Coincidentally in September of the same year I started my photography venture and was looking for work. Our school was also looking for a photographer so one of my first paid photography gigs was for a school of 150+ dancers.

Almost everything that could have gone wrong did. The backdrop burst loose from it's clips and fully unrolled, lighting batteries needed replacing, laptops overheated, many blinks were photographed.

But we fixed things and improvised on the fly to get through the two days. Our main light partially consisted of a strip of fabric from Spotlight, the backdrop was held together with tape and hope, and we delivered an excellent set of images that made parents very happy.

I didn't know how viable what I had just done was, but I knew I wanted to do more of it.

After moving in 2019 I stopped dancing but continued shooting, having since worked with schools in the Hunter Valley, Newcastle, and Sydney.

Things have greatly improved since that first shoot with my average heart rate sitting much lower during photo days.
